Career highlights
- Selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 4th round of the 1965 amateur draft
- Debuted with the Cubs the very same year, at age 19, in a relief role (9/4/1969)
- Pitched three consecutive complete-game shutouts in 1968 (July 24-August 2) and 1969 (May 11-20). He is one of only 13 pitchers in MLB history to accomplish the same feat two or more times
- Tossed complete-game win over Baltimore Orioles in Game 3 of A.L. Championship Series, allowing only 3 hits and one walk over 11 innings. Through 2023, Holtzman was one of only 14 pitchers in major-league history to throw 11 or more innings in postseason game, and only one to allow 6 or fewer baserunners
