Here are your MLB highlights for the week of June 10-16, 2019:

Mazel tov

  • As of June 10, Alex Bregman (Astros) led all A.L. third basemen with 630,159 All Star votes, dwarfing #2 Gio Urshela’s 269,716 votes.
  • As of June 10, Joc Pederson (Dodgers) was the #4 vote-getter among N.L. outfielders, behind Cody Bellinger, Christian Yelich and Ronald Acuna Jr.

Stats to share

  • 1B Rowdy Tellez (Blue Jays) hit his 10th and 11th home runs, tying him for #3 among A.L. rookies. They included his second grand-slam of the season.
  • 3B Alex Bregman (Astros) leads the Major Leagues in walk-to-strikeout ratio, at 1.19 (54 Ks vs 39 BBs). The 4 walks he drew on June 12 set a personal record.
  • Bregman’s 19 HRs are tied for #3 in the National League, and his .939 OPS is ranked #4.

At the plate

  • CF Kevin Pillar (Giants) hit a sizzling .571 (8-for-14) with 3 HRs, 4 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. And in a Jew vs. Jew moment, Pillar robbed Ian Kinsler (Padres) of a hit.

  • 2B Ian Kinsler (Padres) continued his hot streak, hitting .421 (8-for-19) with a home run, double, 4 RBIs, stolen base, and a .476 on-base percentage. He’s hitting .372 through the first half of June.
  • 1B Rowdy Tellez (Blue Jays) hit .368 (7-for-19) with 2 HRs, a double, triple, and 4 RBIs. On June 12, the same day he hit a grand-slam HR, Tellez stole the first base of his MLB career.

  • 3B Alex Bregman (Astros) hit .214 (3-for-14) with a home run and 4 RBIs, but an extraordinary 10 walks (against 2 strikeouts) brought his OBP to .542 for the week. Bregman also made a slick play to deny Tyler White of a sure-fire hit.

  • LF Ryan Braun (Brewers) hit .250 (5-for-20) with a solo HR and a .286 OBP.
  • C Garrett Stubbs (Astros) went hitless in 5 at-bats and drove in one run.
  • LF Joc Pederson (Dodgers) went hitless in 16 at-bats and reached base just once, on a walk. It’s not because he’s striking out a lot; just 2 of his 16 outs were due to strikeouts. But Pederson, who hit a crisp .323 in May, is 0-for-27 since hitting a leadoff single on June 4, the longest hitless streak of his 6-year career.

On the mound

  • Richard Bleier (Orioles) pitched 3 times, yielding one earned run on one hit (a HR) and no walks over 3 combined innings.
  • Max Fried (Braves) struggled again in a June 14 start, yielding 5 earned runs on 7 hits and 2 walks over 4.2 innings while avoiding a loss. But Fried continued his impressive play at the plate, including working Phillies hurler Nick Pivetta for a 13-pitch walk.
