JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — Here are your Players of the Day for Friday (9/3/2010):

• 3B Danny Valencia of the Minnesota Twins went 2/3 and hit a key single in a 4-3 win over the Texas Rangers. Shortly after hitting his second single of the night, the 25-year-old rookie left the game due to tightness in his right hamstring, but the pinch-runner who replaced him eventually scored to tie the game, 3-3. Valencia is batting a blistering .343 since being called up from the minors in June.
• C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) hit a 2-run single, drew an intentional walk and scored the winning run in a 7-4 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The Cats had good reason to walk Lavarnway: in a season split between Portland and the “A-Advanced” Salem Red Sox, he’s batting a combined .289 with 22 HRs and 98 RBIs.
• SP David Kopp of the “AA” Springfield Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) gave up one run over 6 innings in a 4-2 loss to the Tulsa Drillers. Kopp left the game with a 2-1 lead, but the Drillers scored 3 in the 8th to win it. The 24-year-old Clemson recruit allowed 7 hits and no walks while striking out five. He was 0-5 during a stretch in “AAA” this season but is 12-4 with Springfield, where he has a trim 3.05 ERA.
• RF David Rubinstein of the “A” West Virginia Power (Pittsburgh Pirates) went 2/4 with a single, double and run scored in a 6-5 loss to the Hagerstown Suns. An 11th-round pick in the 2008 amateur draft, Rubinstein leads the Power in doubles (36/tie), ranks 2nd  in batting average (.288) and stolen bases (22), and is 4th in on-base percentage (.348) and slugging percentage (.410).
• SP Daniel Rosenbaum of the “A+” Potomac Nationals (Washington Nationals) gave up just four hits and walked none in a 5-0 win over the Salem Red Sox. His “overpowering” performance, which included four strikeouts, moved the Nationals within one game of clinching a spot in the Carolina League playoffs. A 22nd-round pick in the 2009 amateur draft, Rosenbaum is 3-2 with a 2.09 ERA and 115 strikeouts for the Nationals. In a stint earlier this season with the “A” Hagerstown Suns, he was 2-5 with a 2.32 ERA.

• 1B Nate Freiman of the “A” Fort Wayne TinCaps (San Diego Padres) went a combined 7/7 with 3 doubles and 3 RBIs as the TinCaps split a double-header with the South Bend Silver Hawks. A 6’7″ recruit from Duke University, Freiman is batting .298 with 14 HRs, 82 RBIs, an on-base percentage of .373 and a .461 slugging percentage. According to this article, his 41 doubles this season are a franchise record.

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — Here are your Players of the Day for Tuesday (8/31/2010):

• Rookie 3B Danny Valencia of the Minnesota Twins went 2/4 and hit a game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning to defeat the Chicago White Sox 2-1. (Here is video of the hit — and of Valencia being mobbed by teammates afterward.) A mid-season call-up from “AAA” ball, Valencia is batting .332, tops among AL rookies. He is 3rd among AL rookies in on-base percentage (.375) and slugging percentage (.447).
• Two days after going 5/7 against the Albuquerque Isotopes, OF Sam Fuld of the “AAA” Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs) got on base four times in a come-from-behind win over the Isotopes. Fuld had a single, drew three walks, drove in a run and scored 3 more in the 15-13 victory. The 28-year-old Stanford recruit did have one error, but it was his first of the season after 263 chances in the outfield. Fuld is batting .273 and is one of two Iowa starters with more walks (63) than strikeouts (36).
• C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) went 2/4 with an RBI single and 2 walks in a 6-5 loss to the Binghamton Mets. (Binghamton 2B Josh Satin contributed a solo HR for the Mets.) In a season split between Portland and the “A-Advanced” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is batting a combined .291 with 22 HRs, 96 RBIs, a .397 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage. His 96 RBIs are tops among Red Sox farm hands.
• RP Jason Markovitz of the “A” Clinton LumberKings (Seattle Mariners) pitched 3 scoreless innings in a 4-3 loss to the Beloit Snappers. In a season split between the LumberKings and the “A-short season” Everett AquaSox, Markovitz is 2-2 with a 3.25 ERA, 38 strikeouts and 9 walks.
• SS Jake Lemmerman of the rookie-league Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers) hit a solo HR and an RBI single in a 6-2 win over the Idaho Falls Chukars. The top Jewish pick in the 2010 draft (5^th round, 172^nd overall), Lemmerman leads the league in doubles (23) and runs scored (63); ranks 2nd in slugging percentage (.576), on-base percentage (.428) and OPS (1.003); and has the third-highest batting average (.357).
• RP Andrew Pevsner, Lemmerman’s teammate on the rookie-league Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers), pitched 2 scoreless innings and earned a “hold” in the win over the Chukars. A 16^th-round pick in the 2010 amateur draft, Pevsner is 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA (3rd best on the team) and has 30 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings pitched.

• Rookie 3B Danny Valencia of the Minnesota Twins went 3/4 with two doubles and an RBI in a 4-3 triumph over the Detroit Tigers. A mid-season call-up from “AAA” ball, Valencia is batting .328, tops among AL rookies. He is 3rd among AL rookies in on-base percentage (.373) and slugging percentage (.446).
• C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) hit a solo HR and a sacrifice fly in a 6-0 drubbing of the Binghamton Mets. The home run was his 5^th in the past 8 games. In a season split between Portland and the “A-Advanced” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is batting a combined .288 with 22 HRs, 95 RBIs, a .393 on-base percentage and .499 slugging percentage.
• 2B Jason Kipnis of the “AA” Akron Aeros (Cleveland Indians) hit a triple and an RBI double in a 10-4 victory over the Trenton Thunder. In a season split between the Aeros and the “A+” Kinston Indians, the 23-year-old Arizona State recruit is batting a combined .313 with 15 HRs, 71 RBIs, an on-base percentage of .394, and a .502 slugging percentage.
• 1B Nate Freiman of the “A” Fort Wayne TinCaps (San Diego Padres) hit a two-run double, a single, and drew a walk in a 13-9 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods. A 6’7″ recruit from Duke University, Freiman leads the TinCaps in doubles (38), HRs (14/tie) and RBIs (77), and has the 2nd-highest slugging percentage (.449).
• SP Andrew Berger of the “A-short season” Yakima Bears (Arizona Diamondbacks) had his best start in more than a month, pitching 5 scoreless innings in a 4-3 win over the Tri-City Dust Devils. An undrafted pitcher out of Lehigh University, Berger gave up five hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. The 22-year-old is 2-5 with a 5.60 ERA and has 49 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings.

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) was named Eastern League Player of the Week for Aug. 23-29 after going 8/19 (.421) with three doubles, 4 HRs, 7 RBIs and 7 runs scored. A 23-year-old recruit from Yale, Lavarnway “reached base at least twice in each of the 7 games he played.”

In a season split between Portland and the “A-Advanced” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is batting a combined .288 with 22 HRs (2nd among all Boston Red Sox minor-leaguers), 95 RBIs (1st among Boston minor-leaguers), a .393 on-base percentage and .499 slugging percentage.

The “Player of the Week” honor is Lavarnway’s second this season. He was named Carolina League Player of the Week at Salem for the week of Apr. 12-18.

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — Here are your Players of the Day for Wednesday (8/25/2010):

No Jewish pitchers played in the majors or minors. Here’s how our batters did:

• Rookie 3B Danny Valencia of the Minnesota Twins went 1/3 with a 2-run triple — his first MLB three-bagger — and a walk in a 6-3 defeat of the Seattle Mariners. A mid-season call-up from “AAA” ball, Valencia is batting .325, tops among AL rookies. He is third among rookie is on-base percentage (.371) and slugging percentage (.438).
• LF Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers went 1/4 with a two-run double in a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The double was his 34th of the season, 4th highest in the NL. Braun is batting .293 with 18 HRs and 77 RBIs.
• LF Adam Stern of the “AAA” Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers) extended his hitting streak to 10 games, going 3/5 with 2 doubles and a run scored in a 10-3 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs. According to this article, Stern is hitting a league-best.375 since July 1. He is batting .329 for the season.
• C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) blasted a 3-run HR and walked twice in a 5-1 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The home run was Lavarnway’s 4^th in the past 5 games. In a season split between Portland and the “A-Advanced” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is batting a combined .288 with 21 HRs, 92 RBIs, a .391 on-base percentage and .493  slugging percentage.
• 2B Jason Kipnis of the “AA” Akron Aeros (Cleveland Indians) singled and drew a bases-loaded walk in a 5-2 win over the Erie SeaWolves. A 2^nd-round pick in the 2009 amateur draft, Kipnis is batting .326 with 9 HRs and 38 RBIs since being promoted to the Aeros mid-season. He leads the team in on-base percentage (.405) and ranks 3^rd in slugging percentage (.516) and on-base plus slugging (.921).
• 2B Josh Satin of the “AA” Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) reached base three times (single, walk, hit-by-pitch) and drove in the Mets’ lone run in a 9-1 plundering by the Reading Phillies. In a season split between Binghamton and the “A+” St. Lucie Mets, Satin is batting a combined .322 with 11 HRs, 38 doubles, 73 RBIs and a .410 on-base percentage.
• SS Jake Lemmerman of the rookie-league Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers) went 3/5 with two runs scored in a 6-3 win over the Great Falls Voyagers, raising his batting average to .360, second-best in the league. The top Jewish pick in the 2010 draft (5^th round, 172^nd overall), Lemmerman has 7 HRs, 22 doubles, 35 RBIs and an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .993 in 225 at-bats. He has scored a league-best 59 runs.

• OF Ben Guez of the “AAA” Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) went 2/4 with an RBI single in a 7-3 win over the Columbus Clippers. A Houston native who was selected in the 19^th round of the 2008 amateur draft, Guez  is batting .273 with 9 HRs and 30 RBIs since being promoted to “AAA” mid-season. His .361 on-base percentage and .492 slugging percentage rank 2^nd and 3^rd among Mud Hens with at least 150 at-bats. Toledo is in last place in its division with a 61-69 record.
• 2B Jason Kipnis of the “AA” Akron Aeros (Cleveland Indians) went 2/4 with an RBI single in a 6-3 victory over the Bowie Baysox. A 2^nd-round pick in the 2009 amateur draft, Kipnis is batting .319 with 9 HRs and 37 RBIs since being promoted to the Aeros mid-season. He leads the team in on-base percentage (.400) and ranks 3^rd in slugging percentage (.515). Akron is fourth in its division with a 65-64 record.
• 2B Josh Satin of the “AA” Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) went a combined 4/8 with a double and 3 runs scored in a double-header sweep of the New Britain Rock Cats. In a season split between Binghamton and the “A+” St. Lucie Mets, Satin is batting a combined .324 with 11 HRs, 38 doubles, 72 RBIs and a .410 on-base percentage. Binghamton is third in its division with a 62-65 record.
• C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) went 1/3 with a solo HR in a 6-3 loss to the Harrisburg Senators. It was his second opposite-field HR in as many days and third dinger in the past five games. In 114 games this season with Portland and the “A-Advanced” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is batting a combined .284 with 19 HRs, 88 RBIs, a .384 on-base percentage and .477  slugging percentage. Portland is fifth in its division with a 61-67 record.
• SS Jake Lemmerman of the rookie-league Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers) went 2/3 with a double, 3 walks, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored in a 13-3 crushing of the Billings Mustangs. The top Jewish pick in the 2010 draft (5^th round, 172^nd overall), Lemmerman is batting .356 with 7 HRs, 22 doubles, 35 RBIs and an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .998 in 216 at-bats. His team-leading 57 runs scored is 21 more than the next-highest player. Ogden leads its division with a 15-8 record.
• Lemmerman’s teammate, RP Andrew Pevsner of the rookie-league Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers), pitched 2 scoreless innings in the win over the Mustangs, giving up 2 hits and one walk while striking out four. A 16^th-round pick in the 2010 amateur draft, Pevsner is 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA and is averaging one strikeout per inning.

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — Here are your Players of the Day for Monday (8/23/2010):

Two “AAA” players went head-to-head…

• As expected, the Chicago Cubs sent OF Sam Fuld back down to “AAA” on Monday to make room for 1B Micah Hoffpauir, but Fuld made the best of it. The 28-year-old stroked a pinch-hit triple in the 7^th inning to start a rally against the Nashville Sounds. Chicago had promoted Fuld to fill a roster vacancy created when 1B Derrek Lee was traded to the Atlanta Braves. During his three-game stint in the bigs, Fuld, a defensive specialist, went 0/2.
• Thanks in part to LF Adam Stern, the “AAA” Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers) defeated the Iowa Cubs 8-6. The 30-year-old Canadian went 2/4 with a walk and two runs scored, raising his batting average to .322, second highest on the team. Like Fuld, Stern had a brief stint in this majors this season, going 0/8.

In other minor-league news…

• SP Daniel Rosenbaum of the “A+” Potomac Nationals (Washington Nationals) pitched masterfully against the Wilmington Blue Hooks, giving up just one hit (a solo HR) and one walk over 6 innings while striking out four. The 22-year-old Xavier University recruit left the game with the Nationals ahead 3-1, but his relievers couldn’t hold the lead, and the Nationals fell 6-3. In a season split between the Nationals and the “A” Hagerstown Suns, Rosenbaum is a combined 4-7 with 107 strikeouts, 38 walks and a 2.34 ERA.
• C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) went 2/4 with a double, a HR and a walk in a 10-5 victory over the Harrison Senators. In a season split between the Sea Dogs and the “A+” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is batting a combined .284 with 18 HRs, 87 RBIs, a .383 on-base percentage and .470 slugging percentage. Over his past 10 games he is batting .361 with a .465 on-base percentage and .611 slugging percentage.

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — Here are your Players of the Day for Thursday (8/19/2010):

• Batting leadoff, LF Adam Stern of the “AAA” Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers) went 3/4 and scored 1 run in an 8-7 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. The 30-year-old Canadian — who went 0/8 in brief stints with the Brewers this season — is hitting .309 (3^rd highest on the team) with 4 HRs and 25 RBIs in 230 at-bats.
• SP David Kopp of the “AA” Springfield Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) had his longest outing of the season, pitching 7 ^1/3 innings in a 4-2 victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks. A 24-year-old Clemson recruit, Kopp gave up 6 hits and walked one while striking out two. He was 0-5 during a stretch in “AAA” this season but is 11-3 with the Cardinals.
• 2B Josh Satin of the “AA” Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) went 2/5 with a double, HR and 2 RBIs in a 5-0 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Since being promoted to “AA” ball mid-season, Satin is batting .327 with  a .416 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage. The 25-year-old Berkeley recruit has batted.450 in his last 10 games, with 4 HRs, 11 RBIs and an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of 1.372.
• Playing in the DH position, C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) went 2/4 with a HR and one RBI in a 9-8 victory over the Altoona Curve. In a season split between the Sea Dogs and the “A+” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is batting a combined .281 with 17 HRs, 86 RBIs, a .379 on-base percentage and .462 slugging percentage.

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — Here are your Players of the Day for Saturday (8/14/2010):

• LF Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers went 3/5 with two doubles and scored the winning run in a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies. A 26-year-old in his fourth major-league season, Braun has hit .394 in his last 10 games, boosting his average to .289.
• RP Scot Drucker of the “AAA” Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) pitched two innings of one-hit ball in a 7-3 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, striking out two and walking none. A 28-year-old in his fifth minor-league season, Drucker is 4-5 with a 5.69 ERA, 59 strikeouts and 26 walks.
• 2B Josh Satin of the Binghamton Mets (AA) hit his third home run in four games en route to an 11-9 win over the Reading Phillies. Since being promoted to “AA” mid-season, Satin is batting .325 with  a .417 on-base percentage and .485 slugging percentage. His recent home-run prowess is sudden: in his first 52 games with Binghamton this year, Satin had just one dinger.
• C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) went 3/5 with one RBI in a 6-5 victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Lavarnway opened the 10th and final inning with a single; a teammate sent in to pinch-run for him scored the winning run. Since being promoted to “AA” ball, the 23-year-old Yale recruit is batting .271 with 2 HRs and 22 RBIs in 96 at-bats.
• SS Jake Lemmerman of the rookie-league Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers) went 3/5 with a double and 1 RBI in a 7-5 victory over the Idaho Falls Chukars. A 21-year-old recruit from Duke University, Lemmerman is ranked 1st in the Rookie Pioneer League in doubles (19), 5th in on-base percentage (.413), and 6th in batting average (.351) and slugging percentage (.539).
• SP Joshua Zeid of the “A” Lakewood BlueClaws (Philadelphia Phillies) struck out 7 and walked none in a 6-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds. A 23-year-old in just his second year of minor-league ball, Zeid has struck out 91 batters in 88-and-2/3 innings but walked only 23. He has a 6-4 record and a 2.74 ERA. JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — Here are your Players of the Day for Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010:

• 2B Jason Kipnis of the “AA” Akron Aeros (Cleveland Indians) scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning for a 3-2 win over the Reading Phillies. A second-round pick in the 2009 amateur draft, Kipnis went 3/5 with a triple and one RBI. His .332 average is high enough to lead the league, but Kipnis — who was promoted to “AA” mid-season — lacks enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting crown.
• C Ryan Lavarnway of the “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) went 2/4 with a double and a walk in a 9-2 victory over the Bowie Baysox. In 104 games this season with Portland and the “A-Advanced” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is batting a combined .279 with 16 HRs, 84 RBIs, a .378 on-base percentage, and a .460 slugging percentage. As this article points out, the 23-year-old Yale alum has cooled off a bit since a red-hot start in “AA” ball.

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — The best major- or minor-league performances of Thurs., July 22:

• Ryan Lavarnway, “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox). The 22-year-old catcher continued his hot streak, going 3-for-5 on Thursday with three RBIs. Since his promotion from the “A+” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is 12-for-27 with a remarkable 14 RBIs and 1.087 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage).
• Jake Lemmerman, “Rookie Pioneer League” Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers). The 21-year-old shortstop continued his hot streak Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and four runs scored. The top Jewish pick in the June 2010 amateur draft — 5th round, 172nd overall — Lemmerman is batting .372 with 16 extra-base hits in 113 at-bats.
• Kevin Youkilis, Boston Red Sox. The first baseman went 3-for-6 and scored the go-ahead run in an 8-6, extra-inning victory over the Seattle Mariners. Youkilis is ranked third in the AL in on-base percentage (.407) and fourth both in slugging percentage (.569) and OPS (.976).

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — The best major- or minor-league performances of Wed., July 21:

• Ryan Lavarnway, “AA” Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox). The 22-year-old catcher out of Yale University continues to tear up AA pitching, going 2-for-4 on Wednesday with two RBIs. In just six games since being promoted from the “A+” Salem Red Sox, Lavarnway is batting .409 with a phenomenal 11 RBIs in 22 at-bats.

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — Los Angeles Dodgers C Brad Ausmus and Washington Nationals SP Jason Marquis have spent much of the 2010 season on the disabled list. But both made decent showings in minor-league rehab games the past week and may be nearing a return to the Show.

Ausmus, 41, went 6-for-12 in four games for the “A+” Inland Empire 66ers before moving up to the Dodgers’ “AAA” squad, the Albuquerque Isotopes. He’s batting a less impressive 1-for-8 with the Isotopes.

Marquis, a 31-year-old right hander,  pitched three innings of scoreless ball for the Nats’ rookie-league squad on Sunday, giving up just two hits while striking out four batters and walking none.

In other news:

• The Boston Red Sox promoted C Ryan Lavarnway to the franchise’s “AA” team, the Portland Sea Dogs. Through the All-Star break, Lavarnway — then with the Salem Red Sox — led all minor-league Jews with 14 home runs, 63 RBIs, 44 walks, a .487 slugging percentage, and an OPS of .879. Since arriving in Portland, Lavarnway has gone 4-for-11 with two walks and two RBIs.
• The Philadelphia Phillies promoted RP Michael Schwimer to the “AAA” Lehigh Valley IronPigs. While playing for the “AA” Reading Phillies, the 6’8″ right-hander assembled a 5-3 record with an ERA of 3.60 and an impressive 58 strikeouts in 40 innings, while walking only 14.
• SP Michael Schlact wasted no time making an impact on the “AA” Frisco RoughRiders after the Texas Rangers promoted him. On Sunday, the 6’7″ right-hander gave up just one hit and one walk in six innings of play while striking out four.

JEWISH BASEBALL NEWS — Midway through the 2010 season, Jewish minor leaguers are performing well. The 20 Jewish pitchers have a collective won-loss record of 59-52, a 3.85 ERA and a 2.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio through games played July 14. The 28 position players have a combined batting average of .274 and a walk-to-strikeout ratio of .503, according to Jewish Baseball News calculations.

A list of category leaders and laggards is shown below. But first, a few clarifications:

• Players marked with an asterisk have played in two or more leagues this season, and the statistics shown reflect their collective performance across all leagues. The team shown is the players’ current one.
• Calling David Kopp the winningest pitcher is slightly misleading. Kopp assembled an 8-1 record and 3.08 ERA with the “AA” Springfield Cardinals before being called up to the “AAA” Memphis Redbirds. In his first four games in Memphis, Kopp went 0-4 with a 7.53 ERA.
