Jewish Baseball News Hitter of the Week: Rhett Wiseman
RF Rhett Wiseman (Nationals/High-A) hit .357 (5-for-14) with 2 HRs, 2 RBIs, 3 walks and a stolen base. For the season, he is hitting .277 with 5 HRS, 15 RBIs and a .358 on-base percentage.
Jewish Baseball News Pitcher of the Week: Matthew Gorst
P Matthew Gorst (Red Sox/High-A) held opponents scoreless for 2.2 innings across 2 appearances, earning 2 saves while striking out 6 batters and yielding 2 hits and no walks. He is 0-1 this season with 4 saves, a 1.26 ERA, 20 strikeouts and just 2 walks in 14.1 innings. This is Gorst’s second Pitcher of the Week honor this season.
Other highlights
- 1B Cody Decker* (Diamondbacks/AAA) hit .318 last week (7-for-22) with 2 doubles, a triple, 5 RBIs and 2 walks. His .945 OPS (on-base plus slugging) is tops among Jewish minor-leaguers. Decker’s love affair with the fans of El Paso was rhapsodized in a recent Texas Monthly article.
- C Garrett Stubbs (Astros/AAA) hit .313 (5-for-16) with a walk and one RBI. His .347 average leads all Jewish minor-leaguers.
- SS Scott Burcham* (Rockies/AA) played his first two games of the season, hitting .429 (3-for-7) with a double, 2 RBIs, 2 walks and a stolen base.
- OF Zach Borenstein* (Mets/AAA) hit a 9th-inning, walk-off single on May 2 to give the Las Vegas 51s a 6-5 win over the Sacramento River Cats. He had homered earlier in the game. Borenstein’s 7 HRs and 23 RBIs are #1 among Jewish minor-leaguers.
- 1B Rowdy Tellez (Blue Jays/AAA) hit .308 (8-for-26) with a double, 3 walks and a stolen base.
- In the first two Triple-A appearances of his career, P Robert Stock (Padres/AAA), held opponents hitless for a total of 2 innings, yielding one walk while striking out 2.
- P Sam Delaplane (Mariners/A) held opponents scoreless for 2.2 innings across 2 appearances, earning his second win while striking out 5 and yielding 2 hits and a walk. He has 19 strikeouts in 11.1 innings.
- P Jake Fishman (Blue Jays/High-A) held opponents scoreless for 3 innings across 2 appearances, yielding 2 hits and no walks while striking out 3.
- P Brad Goldberg* (White Sox/AA) held opponents scoreless for 2.1 innings across 2 appearances, yielding one hit and 2 walks while striking out 2.
- P Jason Richman (Dodgers/High-A) pitched 4.2 scoreless innings across 2 appearances, yielding 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. In his last 10 games, he is 1-1 with a 1.53 ERA and 2 saves.
- P Scott Effross (Cubs/AA) pitched 2 scoreless innings on May 3, yielding 2 hits and no walks while striking out one.
- P Dean Kremer* (Dodgers/High-A) has 44 strikeouts in 31.1 innings, 2nd most in the California League.
Transactions
- P Max Fried (Braves/AAA) was optioned to Triple-A by the Atlanta Braves.
- P Ryan Sheriff (St. Louis Cardinals) completed a Triple-A rehab assignment.
- SS Scotty Burcham (Rockies/AA) was assigned to Double-A.
- P Craig Breslow (Blue Jays/AA) was placed on the disabled list.
- C Jason Goldstein (Athletics/High-A) was activated off the disabled list.
Free agents
- Former major- and minor-leaguers believed to be seeking employment include Scott Feldman, Elliott Barzilli, Dalton Blumenfeld, Mike Meyers*, Troy Neiman*, Adam Sonabend, Maxx Tissenbaum and Jeremy Wolf.
- Ike Davis*, a former major leaguer who tried to reinvent himself as a pitcher in 2017, is rumored to have retired, but this is unconfirmed.
