We all know Sam Fuld is a superior outfielder who covers ground quickly, throws like a rocket, and regularly puts his body at risk to make a catch. They don’t call him Super Sam for nothing.
On Friday, the 33-year-old Athletic outdid himself by tossing out two batters in one game, a rare feat.
In the 3rd inning, Rays catcher Rene Rivera hit a liner down the third-base line. Fuld, who prefers centerfield but was playing in left, sprinted toward the baseline, expertly retrieved the ball after it caromed off the wall, and tossed it to second base, where Eric Sogard easily tagged Rivera out.
In the 7th inning, the Rays’ James Loney hit a fly ball to Fuld in left, and when Evan Longoria tried to tag up, Fuld tossed him out at home.
Of course, Fuld can deliver at the plate, too. He contributed a two-run single in Saturday’s 5-0 win over the Rays.
